How to create an account:
Registering an account with BoatBuilding.net will allow you to customize the look and feel of the site, post comments under your username, and experience greater participation in the interactive forums on BoatBuilding.net. We do not collect your personal information to sell or to give to third parties, please read our privacy policy to see how committed we are to protecting your data.

To register an account, click on the "Don't have an account? Click here to create one" link in the login box on the main page. You will be brought to a new login page which has a section on the right hand side for new users. Choose a unique username, which can be your real name or a fake nickname. Then enter your real e-mail address in the box below it. This e-mail address will not be visible to other users by default.

Please note, if you enter a username or e-mail address that someone else has already registered with, you will need to choose another.

Now click on the newuser button, and you will be e-mailed a password to log in with. If you don't get an automated response by e-mail, contact us.

Now that you've got a username and password, you can go back to the site and log into it via the login box on the main page.

After logging in, you'll see the main index page again with a message toward the top of the page which reads, "This page was dynamically generated specifically for (your username here)" If you don't see this message, make sure your browser has cookies enabled. You can find out how BoatBuilding.net makes use of cookies by checking out our privacy page.

Once you have logged in, click on User Preferences in the box at the upper left of the main page, to set your preferences. There are several options for customizing your user interface. Click on the Edit User Info link at the top of the page and set up all the fields that are applicable to you. Most options are self-explanatory. Click on the BoatBuilding.net logo at the top of the page to return to the main index.

If you don't click Logout from the menu bar you see in the User Preferences section, the site should remember who you are the next time you visit it. If you're accessing the site from a public computer terminal (such as from a library or university computer cluster), We recommend going into User Preferences and clicking Logout when you're done viewing the site, or the next user that comes along and sits at that computer will be able to go back to the site and mess around with your account.

Those are the basics of registration, and if you have any further questions, feel free to e-mail us. I'll probably add to this section as the questions roll in.

How to submit a story to be posted:
If you know of a relevant news story related to boat building, please have the URL (web address) of the article handy, full text of the articles can not be reprinted due to copyright law.

Go to the main index page and click on the Submit Story link found in the upper left hand box (or just click here). This will bring you to the story submission page.

Enter your name in the Name field, or leave it blank if you want to submit the story anonymously. Do the same for your e-mail address and/or web site, leaving it blank if you'd prefer.

Enter the subject in the Subject field.

Now fill in The Scoop form, giving your own take on the article, and providing the web address were the article is located. You don't have to use HTML tags. The Boatbuilding.net Admin Staff Team will edit submissions if they need to be formatted differently. Here's an example:

XYZ Boat Introduces New Line
XYZ Boat Corporation announced today the introduction of a new entry-level... Here is where the page is located: http://www.xyzboatcorp.com/bignews.htm

Once you've typed it in, press the PreviewStory button, and you'll see how the story will look when it is submitted.

If your submission looks reasonably okay, then click on SubmitStory and your story will be entered into the queue to be submitted.

For your convenience, we've put together this HTML Quick Reference Guide.

How to post comments on a story:
One of the really neat things about BoatBuilding.net is that for each story posted, there is a message board where users can discuss and debate issues related to that story's topic. This is done by posting comments in the story's section. Here's how to post a comment:

Pick the story you want to post a comment on, and look toward the bottom of the story blurb. There should be a "Read More..." link, which when you click on it, will take you to the comment board for that story.

The comment board shows a view similar to the main page, with only the particular story you selected displayed. Below that, there are several pull down menus that you can use to filter comments and change the way they are displayed (Threaded/Nested/Flat).

If you want to start a new comment thread (i.e.; you are not replying to someone else's comment), click on the Reply button and a new page will show up with a comment form.

If you want to reply to a specific comment, a "Reply to This" link should appear at the bottom of the comment. Click on the Reply to This button to reply within the thread.

After entering your text into the Comment field, click on the Preview button and you will see how the comment will look before it is permanently posted. Then click the Submit button to submit your comment to the board.

If any of this isn't clear, please feel free to email us and we will be happy to help!
