IYRS and the Museum of Yachting lectures series begin

Monday, 01 February 2010

An evening with Lloyd McCaffery, one of the world's leading marine model artists, kicks off a five-part lecture series organized by IYRS and the Museum of Yachting on Artists and Authors. McCaffery's talk, "Art in Miniature"-which takes place February 23 at 7:30 pm-will focus on the art of model making, an endeavor that McCaffery himself states requires "a balance between the analytical approach of a technician and the intuitive feeling of an artist."

The remaining four lectures in the series include:

March 9: Russell Jinishian / "Collecting Fine Marine Art"

March 23: Andrew German, "J.E. Buttersworth: 19th-Century Marine Painter"

April 6: Benjamin Mendlowitz, "Photography of Classic Yacht Restoration"

April 20: Doug Adkins, "Dorade, The History of an Ocean Racing Yacht"

All lectures take place at 7:30 pm, at IYRS Restoration Hall, on Tuesday evenings. Lectures are free to members of IYRS and the Museum of Yachting; $7 for non-members.

March 6: IYRS Marine Industry Career Day / 10 am - 2 pm / IYRS Restoration Hall (449 Thames Street, Newport)

The Fifth Annual IYRS Marine Industry Career Day on Saturday, March 6 will give individuals interested in marine careers a valuable chance to learn about career opportunities and green jobs that are emerging in the field. This year's event features a special appearance by world-renown marine technical expert and writer Nigel Calder. Calder-who has been on the frontlines of exploring new technologies that he believes have the potential to revolutionize onboard marine systems-will talk about career opportunities that are developing alongside the new technologies that are emerging as the marine industry looks for green alternatives. During the one-day event, which is free and open to the public, Career Day attendees will be able to meet with regional marine employers, including boat builders, boat yards, and marine manufacturers; learn about the skills needed to work in the boating business and the training programs where they can gain those in-demand skills; and attend informative seminars on finding employment opportunities in the marine trades and funding for training programs.

April 29: IYRS Marine Systems and Composites Technology Open House / 4 pm-7 pm / IYRS Bristol Campus (257 Franklin Street, Bristol)

On April 29, IYRS will host an evening Open House at its 5,000-square-foot teaching facility in Bristol, where the school runs its Marine Systems program and the newly launched Composites Technology program. This Open House will be the public's first opportunity to learn more about the Composites Technology program-the first of its kind in the rapidly growing composites field due to its length, in-depth curriculum, and emphasis on teaching both hands-on practical skills and the theory behind the processes and applications of this fast-evolving technology. The program is targeted to meet the needs of the marine industry, but graduates will have a choice of career paths since the high strength-to-weight ratio of composite materials pioneered by boat builders is now in demand by many industries, including wind energy, aerospace, and transportation. Individuals interested in arranging an appointment to get further information on IYRS programs during the Open House should contact John Freer (jfreer@iyrs.org / 401-848-5777, ext. 203).

June 5: IYRS Graduation and Launch Day / IYRS Restoration Hall (449 Thames Street, Newport)

On Saturday, June 5, IYRS students will mark their graduation by showcasing their work and launching the boats they spent the past year refitting and restoring. After the launching, students have their first opportunity to sea-trial their boats and test their workmanship on the water. Graduation ceremonies for students from the Boatbuilding & Restoration program and the Marine Systems program will be held inside Restoration Hall. The launching of the fleet immediately follows at the IYRS docks; the public is welcome to join the festivities. For the first time this year, Marine Systems students will showcase their accomplishments by launching a boat they did significant systems upgrades to, including a diesel-engine rebuild and new electric systems. Boats being launched by Boatbuilding & Restoration students include: a fleet of 12-foot Beetle Cats®, the iconic New England catboat design that dates to 1921; a 1929-launched Herreshoff 12 1/2 originally built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in Bristol (R.I.); a 20-foot, 1941-built Garwood 'Vacationer' motor launch originally built by Garwood Wood Boat Division in Michigan; and a Chris-Craft Model 17 15.5-foot Deluxe Runabout originally built by Chris-Craft Corporation in Michigan in 1940.
