As of 2009 there were a few more than 100 alumni. However, in 2009, 26 people graduated from both the restoration and system programs. At this rate, the Alumni Association will more than double in 3 years. As our numbers grow, we will progressively become more organized and select an Association President along with a group of people to help him or her with the various association activities.
Our first aim is to maintain contact with as many of our fellow alumni as we can. Then, we wish to have two events during the year which will bring us together. The first event which took place in September 2008 was a summer regatta in Newport. It turned out to be very successful and we want to make it an annual event every September. Another successful regatta took place in 2009 and it is planned at this time to provide an opportunity for alumni to meet with newcomer students in the school. Also a winter event is underway for 2010.
In addition, we want to use the web as a means for alumni/alumnae to stay in touch with one another from wherever we may be living and also as a way of interacting with non IYRS alumni, all over the world, who share our interest in wooden boat restoration and construction. Even though the building of this association is a slow process, for those who are involved, it is a labor of love. We will get there eventually.
Why the IYRS Alumni Association website?
This website ( http://www.iyrsalumni.org) was created to allow us to interact after we have graduated , share our experiences , support one another and strengthen our ranks and our interest in this passion as well as in the school which showed us the way to do it professionally.
- If you are an alumnus or alumna who has been away, please enter and see what is happening since you have left the school. Join the rest of us and be an active member of our group.
- If you are someone who wishes to know more about our experience with IYRS, contact us or contact through us an individual alumnus in the US or in other parts of the world, to tell you what he/she thinks and his or her experience at IYRS.
- If you are someone who wants to share with the rest of us what you do in this area, join our blogs, send us photos, come visit us in beautiful Newport.
All of you can be part of the great family of people who like boating, woodworking, maritime heritage, are boat builders or enjoy owning a small wooden boat. We have created this website in conjunction with the IYRS website to help us all interact. Use it, tell us what you think. We are committed to see it evolve and improve with your help.
